The Children’s Garden, on the south side of the driveway, was donated and designed by Carter and Larry Dean. Begun in the spring of 2004, it was designed to be an interactive garden where children can enjoy nature, which will encourage their interest in plants and wildlife. The plantings are designed to appeal to the senses of touch, smell, taste, and sight as well as to attract wildlife such as birds, butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects. In 2009, Marty's Greenhouse was added in memory of one of our original Gardenerds, Marty Hawksworth. Her love of community and gardening made the Children's Garden a perfect place for a wonderful greenhouse, which will helpoverwinter tropicals and become a seed starting station for new plants. This year, we have added a new section of raised beds for "edibles". We have also added a three station compost area, and a new cubed sculpture which lends itself to the new "ABC of Gardening” theme the Children's garden has taken on. The garden is maintained by the Gardenerds during their Wednesday work sessions. Plans for funding include the sale of planst such as those grown in the garden and from donations.
