Family Boatbuilding Week 2014
We are now taking applications for 2015 Family Boatbuilding. To reserve your build slot, please register now.
2015 Family Boatbuilding Week at the Deltaville Maritime Museum will be held from July 12-18.
The Museum has helped 108 teams build their own wood crabbing skiffs. Our boatshop has carefully designed the kit for the skiffs so no prior knowledge of boat building is needed to complete the project. Some woodworking experience is helpful, but the museum volunteers will work with any team to make sure they complete their skiff. Two is a minimum number for a team, but three or four members make the job easier. For the price of the skiff you receive all the materials needed to build the boat. Our local boat letterer, Kaptain Krunch, will even paint the name on your skiff free of charge.
Saturday is race day. The skiffs are launched, rowed by the teams, and awards are presented in a variety of categories. The price of the kit also includes two tickets to the fish fry held at noon on Saturday.
Although other museums have Family boatbuilding, the Deltaville Maritime Museum is the only facility that builds out of solid wood (cypress and fir), taking five days to complete the project. At the end of the week each team takes home a lovely, traditional Chesapeake crabbing skiff.
Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, a volunteer, all donation, non-profit organization, is located in Deltaville, VA. at 287 Jackson Creek Road, and by water on Mill Creek . To get to the Museum and Park, follow Route 33 through Deltaville and turn right across from the Shell Station. The Park is open dawn to dusk all year.
